Refrigerant is the fluid that carries heat out of your home or business. It circulates in a sealed system, so it is not something an air conditioner normally “uses up.” When the refrigerant level is low, there is usually a leak that needs to be located and repaired. 1. Your AC is blowing warm or only mildly cool air

Turn the cooling system off if you see significant ice, then set the fan to “On” to help thaw it. Continuing to run an iced-up AC can risk compressor damage. Keep in mind that restricted airflow from a plugged filter, closed vents, or a blower problem can create similar icing. This is why leak testing and airflow checks belong together.

4. You hear hissing or bubbling near HVAC equipment

A noticeable hissing sound can occur when refrigerant escapes through a small opening in a line, coil, or fitting. A larger leak may create a bubbling or gurgling sound. These noises are often easiest to hear when the system starts or stops, though they are not always present.

Do not try to tighten fittings, pierce lines, or apply a do-it-yourself sealant. Refrigerant work requires proper recovery equipment, pressure testing, and trained handling. A technician can determine whether the noise is related to refrigerant or another source, such as condensate drainage or normal system operation.

5. Your energy bills rise without another clear reason

If your cooling habits have not changed but electric costs have climbed, an inefficient air conditioner may be part of the reason. Low refrigerant forces the system to run longer for less cooling. It can be especially noticeable in a home that previously stayed comfortable with the same thermostat setting.

Then arrange a professional diagnostic visit. Proper refrigerant leak service is more than checking pressure and adding refrigerant. The technician should inspect system operation, evaluate airflow, locate the source of the leak when possible, repair it, test the repair, evacuate moisture and air from the system as needed, and charge the unit to manufacturer specifications. The exact process depends on the equipment and the leak location.

Avoid relying on refrigerant cans, stop-leak additives, or repeated quick recharges. These approaches can hide the problem temporarily and may create additional service issues. They also do not address the efficiency loss or potential damage caused by operating with an incorrect charge.
